LG “PHONE SHOP”

In October of 2010 I directed a spot for LG Papy Plus through Team Y & R, Dubai. Created by Wilbur D’Costa and Guilherme Rangel and shot by Shane Daly. The spot was for the Nigerian Market and told the simple story of a contemporary woman shopping for a mobile phone that fits her “highly connected” lifestyle.  The “old skool” store clerk tries to satisfy her every desires but gets increasingly frustrated when he realizes he cant fit all her demands into one sleek device.

As this spot was for the Nigerian market, I had to capture the authentic texture of a typical phone shop somewhere in Lagos. Guided by the Eye Squad art department team, we built a typical Nigerian street scene on the back lot of Studio City complete with shop facades, signage, pedestrians, cars etc. Inside the store we created phone display counters, brightly painted walls with funny posters, an old radio and charging stations typical of a Nigerian phone shop.

The performers were two talented actors from London. They brought a lot of personality and nuance (especially in nailing the Nigerian intonations and accent). We had a lot of laughs on set thanks to the line “Twittaaa?”
